A group of thugs are playing a friendly round of cards, when their game is interrupted by an interloper. Dressed in a black and yellow monstrosity that appears to have been conceived by a blind designer, the man calling himself Daredevil politely asks for the Fixer. The thugs attack him on the Fixer's behalf, and find themself routed with ease by the acrobatic hero with a billy club. A flashback reveals his origin; raised by a single father (boxer "Battling" Jack Murdock) after his mother's death, young Matt Murdock was encouraged to develop his mind and study habits with far more rigour than his muscles. Matt reluctantly does so, though his taunting classmates nickname him "Daredevil" when he refuses to participate in any sort of contact sport. In an early act of heroism, he prevents a blind (and possibly deaf) old man from being struck by a runaway truck, and is himself exposed to radioactive materials in the process. The radioactive compound robbed him of his sight, but enhanced all of his other senses to superhuman levels while endowing him with an inborn radar sense. His father's career takes off, causing him to tour the country, allowing Matt the time needed to train himself physically without his father finding out. He does not neglect his studies, though, graduating with a law degree as class valedictorian and going into business with college roommate Franklin "Foggy" Nelson. The two attend one of Battling Murdock's fights, inspiring Jack to disobey the Fixer and fight to win. As punishment for not taking a fall, the Fixer has him killed. The blind Matt designs and dons the Daredevil costume and identity, and heads out on the mission he was on when we first met him. The Fixer arrives, and a combination of trickery and acrobatics allows Daredevil to bring the Fixer and his hitman to justice. |
