Introduction of John Kowalski, a disgraced former U.S. Marine now living in Poland at the outbreak of WWII. Kowalski fails to act when Dr. Eric Ostergan, a member of the Anti-Hitler underground warns him of the pending invasion by Germany. Dr. Ostergan is killed in the invasion, cursing Kowalski with his dying breath. A short time later Kowalski is killed in a scuffle with a scavenger. Yet, Kowalski still walks the earth, cursed as an agent of Death, atoning for his sins.
